Engine has a recent problem with overheating. Is this a typical problem with this car? Are the most likely fixes easy for the weekend mechanic?

Most likely fixes: thermostat, coolant temp sensor, bad radiator cap, blocked radiator, head gasket leak, low coolant or coolant dirty/needs flushed. However, most of them are simple but you will want to do a cooling system pressure test to make sure there aren't any issues internally like a head gasket, cracked block, warped head.

Are heads readily available for this engine and in general are parts for the drivetrain getting hard to find for this 20 something year old car?

OK, I was able to get the engine started and not only does coolant disappear butthere is coolant in the oil and what appears to be exhaust gases bubbling up out of the radiator. The guy I got the car from said that he very recently had the head gasket replaced but the overheating problem never went away. Is this a tough head to remove?
