Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Fuel gauge quit working. When first starting car the needle goes all the way to F.  When placed in gear and moving the needle moves down to E.

If the rest of your gauges are working there is a good chance it is the sending unit in the tank. The float sensor may have failed. But to answer your question, yes, there will be a general fuse for gauges.

Does the gauge stay on E except when you first start the car? If so, it more that likely is the sending unit or float in the tank. This has been a common failure part. Hopefully it can be changed out without removing the gas tank. I never changed mine out on my Buick, I just fill after going over 300 miles. When I fill my tank, it drops to E and all kind of warning messages appear. After driving about 40 or so miles, it slowly rises to full. Once it gets to 1/4 tank, it drops like a lead balloon to empty, and it is empty. This is usually after 325 miles in town or 380 miles on long road trips. Have someone check for lose wires first. That may be a problem or corroded contacts at the tank.
