Question type: General

what is the top speed

36 Answers

Hi bobk! The answer to that question can depend on a lot of things. Safe to say though, like most any car, it can go faster than is prudent. Here's a link to a Google Group for Cavaliers that was active as recently as last month. Perhaps starting a thread there can yield some results for you. Good luck!

well if u still have the governor in it the the top speed is 106 if not it will probably top out at 120 or so even though it only says 110 the governor kicks in at 106

haha i have a 95 cavy 2dr automatic with 211xxxkms on it and it gets up to 150 - 160km/h no problem but 160+ it take a bit of time haha i love cavy's though the max i've gotten it up to is 190km/h then i had to turn :( but it sure takes alot of gas going that fast for any period of time

With the early 2000 models, I experience a bit of lifting from thr stock base body kit around 100 - 105. With an automatic Trans, the Trans will reach it's final gear and carry the car every so slowly through 85 and up, as for the max speed I'd say with good resistance limitations 112 to 120 is possible. However the areo dynamics isn't good over 100.

150 kph is closest to 93mph. A good top speed for the second gen phase II. I figure you're being stopped but the gov, or running a 2.2L? The 3.1L and the 2.8L (Z24 for the second gen) is only the stroke distance giving an addiion 5 or so horses. I'm a big J-Body fan, and more so lean on the good ole 2nd Gen Phase II. I've got a 1989 Cavalier Z24 Convertible with the 2.8L. But I've driver a 1988 with the 2.0L and the 94 with the 2.2L Never pushed against the 3.1L in a cavalier, and never found a 3.4L swapped Cavalier that I could driver.

My Bad, 1995 was the generation Gap, either yours is a long and heavy 2nd Gen or the bubble-ish design of the ever so popular 96 - 98 models.

Without governer, It really had a hard time getting past 120mph (193km/h) with my standard 95 4-door (2.2L)

my car is frankenstiened so im not even sure where the motor and tranny came out of, but it can go 170 km/h in fourth lol how fast in 5th i have no idea mine is a 1992 cavalier coupe of some sort lol

your car will not go faster in fifth its a overdrive gear your top speed will be hit in fourth gear...

I had a 93 Z24 that wasn't governed, I got it to 190km/h that was about all it had. I currently have a 97 Z24 coupe that is governed to 170km/h. Try a V6 gen 1 cav. they wern't governed, I have no idea what kind of top speed they would have.

5

that is only true if it cannot provide the power to get the overdrive gear to go faster or if there is to much wind resistance all final gears in a manual transsmission are over drive as far as i know that just means that instead of a 1:1 ratio you have a 0.8:1 ratio or something in that general area it doesnt mean that you cannot go any faster just that you have sacrificed power for efficiency wow that was a long post you are prob right about my car not going any faster in fifth but not because its an overdrive gear just that it cant take the power loss and has to stay at that rpm and speed

2,735

But your arguing semantics here... yes technically a lower ratio will result in more speed but almost no cars hit their top speed in top gear... especially in the range of cars we are considering... the ZR1 vette is the first corvette since the c3 vettes to hit top speed in top gear... but for the most part top speed will be reached in fourth... especially for cars like the the cavalier or mustang... and anyone making a mustang top out in top gear will have had to swap the tranny and therefore has different ratios so it isnt stock anyways... cheers...

honestly id have to see that to believe it ... i also dont know how accurate most speedos are at high speed...

100

governed to 106mph because of the tires,,originaly installed from factory

2004 cavalier drag-limited top speed 140 mph

I've got a '91 Z24 we swapped a 3.4L into, out of an '02 pontiac aztek. It was re-cammed, and received a cold air intake and high flow exhaust. My best time down at the strip was 14.4 at 91mph. It hits the govener in 4th, and quite frankly there's no need to be exceeding that outside a controlled enviorment. My buddy calculated it out when I bounced it off the govener one time, that if I was to hit that 4500rpm in 5th, it would be pulling 240km/h. This would be stupid to attempt on street tires though, as most are not speed rated.

285

Your right, I'm just going by what the speedo was reading. But I was young and stupid then too. My 97 is governed to 105mph which is about 170km/h. That's what they're rated at from the factory.

2,735

Actually it isn't hard to get tires rated for those speeds at all. I run them all summer and Ive been known to go past 240 b4. The tires do wear fast though and you need to know what you are doing.

I have a 1998 Cavalier RS coupe, and it tops out at 110 MPH (governed). I'm sure if someone screwed with the engine and stuff it could go faster.

35

ive got my 1997 cav 2dr coupe to max out at 175 with no engine mods or anything.

35

I have a auto 2004 coupe with factory 16's with v rated tires. only upgrades is a K/N air filter with bosch platinum+4 plugs...top speed according to my GPS...127mph. im sure the 3.1L could do better in the earlier gen.

with a few mods you should be able to hit the 200 mph mark.

I have a 2003 Chevy cavalier base and it only tops out at 170 km if possible 175 km i don't know why this happens... i don't know why Chevy would put 220 km when it cant reach its limit .

I put a twin turbo custom vtec in mine everthing else is stock and it tops out at 150!

Mine is an 04 it tops out at 250 and that's not even going downhill. I put a cobalt turbo and cold air intake in it. I also made gas lines shorter and ripped out gove... and mine is a 4 door. And its only 2.2 eco. I smokes to chargers today. By the way I'm from Huntsville Alabama. We know how to work on cars fuckers.

I realize this is a dead thread but i used to wonder too, so FYI... '97 2.2 5-speed Lansing built j-body with original clutch (eng and trans bone stock never opened up) intake and exhaust ebay bolt ons. Car has 250,000+ miles on it. Deleted air conditioning, Removed side mirrors, partially blocked radiator for aero, bypassed fuel cutoff. Flat out at 600 ft above sea level = 127 MPH (200 KPH) GPS confirmed, a younger car would be a bit faster. Factory Gearing theoretical is 134 MPH+/- tires, but is aero limited.

2003 got up to 140, but she wasn't stock and I was pushing her to all she had.
