1995 dodge ram 1500

I have a 95 dodge ram 1500 the person I get
it from said it might need a fuel pump
The Truck would crank but not start.
I put a new fuel pump in turned the key
about 5 times to prime. Went to start it and it
cough and that was it.
I put about 1.8 gallons of gas in it to get it
going not sure if it was enough or not.
I am lost any suggestions would help
