My daughters 2001 impala went thru a stop sign and when she was speeding up the engine kept working but the car wouldn't go. Transmission. Also the battery was too dead to turn over this morning.

get the alternator tested...and it might have kinda stalled during the stop sign incident. the "kinda stalling" would of made the brakes harder to push to stop the car.
