Why won't my 99 s10 start?

Asked by GuruDQSZ6 Aug 14, 2021 at 11:04 PM about the 2000 Chevrolet S-10 LS Extended Cab 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

So I was coming back from work on a hill with the
cruise controll engaged I hit the clutch to down shift
(Stupid move) and the rpms quickly shot up for a
second then came right back down. Shortly after
doing so I lost all power of throttle. Then the motor
began to bog down and eventually die. I tried starting
it back up but it will not do anything but cycle. Any
ideas?

If this is a high mileage vehicle I'd do a compression test. The timing chain may have jumped or broke when you downshifted. If all cylinders test very low or zero it's the timing chain. If you have the 4 cylinder engine you can reset the valve timing, replace the timing chain and sprockets, and be on your way. I don't think the V6 is an interference engine either but I'm not sure. I know the 4 cylinder is not. Hope that helps! Jim
