Being that old, I would say by running it out of gas the fuel pump got over heated and fried itself. The pumps have to be submerged in gas in order to stay cool. If it's just dripping from the fuel line then the pump is shot. If you didn't run the truck out of gas, then I think the pump just died of old age. If it's original, it would be just about the time for it to go.

cool man thanks ill try that! do u know whats the best way to go about pulling one of them out.... drop the tank or remove the bed???

I've always dropped the tank. If you live in the south, it may be just as easy to take the bed off. Here up north, everything is rusted solid. Especially if it's as old as yours.
