is it dangerous to drive 5 days until repair parts arrive

Asked by Guru9VDYY Jun 17, 2017 at 08:08 PM about the 1998 Chevrolet S-10 RWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

3 days ago variable humming started from back of my Chevy S-10. At low speed the hum is low pitched, at higher speed, pitch becomes higher also. Mechanic said it is not wheel bearings but moving parts in rear axle, U-joint, connections to wheels, etc. Replacement is on order. How dangerous is it for me to drive it to work and back for the next 5 days, 2 hours / day on freeway at 65 mph?

A lot of risk, if you are going 65 you are risking killing yourself and others. Chuck up a cheapo rental for a few days, too much to lose.

Well if it is a u-joint the drive shaft could fall out if the joint gets too bad or other damage can result. I would recommend not driving it or asking your mechanic if it is safe to do so. We have no way here to determine the seriousness of the problem.
