Air compressor diagnostics

Asked by Neric Feb 22, 2019 at 08:59 PM about the 2006 Ford Taurus SE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My a.c. air compressor has been making a
weird sound coming from the pulley. When it
kicks on it starts making a rattling sound. Do
I need to rwplace the whole compressor. Or
can I just replace the clutch and bearing?

Best to replace the whole unit, this is a high speed part and just like your clutch in the transmission when it goes, the bearings and seals go too.( tried the replace the clutch on a ford eclipse and the compressor when out 2 months later.)

How would you release the coolant from the compressor before removing it?

disconnect electrical connection drive to a jiffy lube and ask for them to pump out the coolant. it is illegal to release the coolant with a disconnected hose even if you wear googles. When you replace the unit pump out the air, create a vacuum and then use coolant with oil to fill from the low pressure side. Napa rents the vacuum pump, and the tools.
