2004 f150 5.4 3v charging issues

Long story short, engine went out and needed to be
replaced. I replaced it. Now im having a strange charging
issue. It wont charge past 12.12 volts UNLESS... I remove
the alternator cable from the battery post and reconnect it
while its running. Then it over charges to atleasrt 16v.. If i
shut it off it goes back to not charging... Had the alternator
tested 5btimes at autozone. It passed all 5 times. Had no
issues before the engine swap. And the truck will run and
drive for hours without the lights on. The truck will also die
if i remove a battery terminal the truck shuts off. PLEASE
help. This is driving me up the wall.

Bad voltage regulator? Don't remove the battery cable with the engine running unless you want expensive electronics damage!
