Dash lights, cig lighter and blinkers not working

Asked by Islandg0er Dec 01, 2017 at 11:21 AM about the 1998 Ford F-150 XL 4WD LB

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My dash lights went out along with my cig lighter and blinkers. The weird thing
is when I turn on my headlights or push in the cig lighter, the blinker and brights
indicators light up on the dash. Also, with my lights on the taillight will go out on
the side I put the blinker switch on. I've checked all fuses and found no obvious
shorts in the wires.  I'm at a loss, any ideas? Thanks

I've got Vw transporter ( ex gas van) with override ignition button which works fine but last few days wipers not working, lights only work on side lights/ no main beam unless I pull the lever and the heaters not blowing yet brake lights and indicators okay. Wondering if cold weather affecting it all ? Booked in Monday with garage. :( Will update results for future reference.

Definitely not cold weather related as I live in the Virgin Islands. It's 80 degrees but we did just have 2 cat 5 hurricanes so maybe water related?

What you will need is a volt meter and a color coded wiring diagram to begin tracking the short. May want to check with a Ford Service Adviser on that one. They may have experienced the same problem with other vehicles in the past. You can also check the net for videos on how to trace an auto electrical short
