I have a 5 speed manual transmission in a 1997 Ford f150 that is stuck in first gear and will not shift into any other gear including neutral. What is the problem and how do I fix it?

It would be your gear linkage that is the issue and you would have to drop your transmission to access it.

Um....there is NO linkage on that transmission. Usually it's the shifter tower that has failed. Is the stick just loose and doesn't engage anything? If so, pull the boot and unbolt the tower from the transmission (easy peezy). Go to the Ford Dealer and get another one. Common problem. I wouldn't recommend a used shifter because it's probably worn out too. You may be able to purchase one aftermarket. IDK.

I have 1997 f150 5 speed 4.6, and just started when u got to 2nd gear, the shifter comes all the way to the seat and sometimes hard to get in other gears. I just put in a new internal slave cylinder, new clutch, new pressure plate, like 3 weeks ago. Any ideas ?

At is a common problem for that transmission the shift Fork is the problem it probably has worn down and needs a new shift Fork where you can buy a junkyard shifter cover if I was you I would probably go ahead and rebuild the shifter on the top it does not cost that much and it's very simple to do but this probably will not fix your problem it is the shift Fork that's the inside the shift housing
