What's wrong

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 1992 Ford F150 XLT, 5.0. I recently
acquired this pick up a few months ago and have
recently noticed some issues. (Possibly all
connected?) I'm biting thru oil quick, apx 5 quarts
in a couple months. I have found oil in my air filter
box and soaked thru my air filter and breather filter.
I replaced both filters as well as the hose and
connections coming from the oil input on the
motor. I have also noticed I'm going thru coolant
very quickly as well. There has been "vanilla
pudding" looking stuff around oil cap and dipstick
as well. When i check oil after truck has been
running for a bit, there is light smoke coming out of
hole and the dip stick is so hot i cant touch it. I
checked for blow-by by seeing if oil cap rattles and
placong my hand over oil reservoir, but no pressure
building up when doing so. Any suggestions or
ideas?

your head gasket has failed and is allowing coolant to mix with an oil passage. The way to fix it is to remove your cylinder head and install a new gasket. Then re-torque your head back to the block. This should take you a day to accomplish the task.

you can research the procedure online depending on your engine size etc.

Give it a compression test, any cylinder more than 10% off compared to the others is likely blown. You can rent tester from most parts stores. I would also check the crankcase ventilation as well, both PCV and EGR. PCV means "positive crankcase ventilation." LACK of ventilation can cause emulsified oil in the crankcase, that frothy milky looking substance around the oil fill cap. (to be fair that can also come from a blown head gasket). The fact that you're burning both oil and coolant along with the emulsion, tends to point to a head gasket. Get the compression test and you'll know for sure. Another test that can indicate a blown head gasket is with Block Tester, test kit costs $50, or you can rent it for around $25.
