What is the thumping sound in my trunk?

I have a 2005 S430 Mercedes.  There is a thumping and then hissing sound
coming from the trunk on the driver's side.  Is this the door closing mechanism?  
All doors work except the driver's door.  Maybe something in the door is broken,
but the pump keeps trying to do its thing???
