The (IAC) Idle Air Control has a valve that opens to adjust air flow at start up and idle. I suspect that since it cranks up when pushing the gas pedal that the IAC is not opening like it should, possibly it is dirty.

If its just dirty, then it will need to be removed and cleaned. I would also advise removing the Throttle body and cleaning it, you will need to use throttle body cleaner and nylon brushes (assorted pack) to clean them up with different size and shape brushes to fit in small places. While throttle body is off also clean as far into intake as you can. Re-install with new gaskets. Now before doing the cleaning you will want to check the IAC electrical connections and make sure your air-filter is clean. I use dielectric grease in the electrical connections. See if this helps. If you have any check engine warning light on dash have the computer scanned for codes at a auto parts store and let me know what code(s) are there.
