Toyota rav 4 96 rough slide on shifter will switch gears .

Shifter is slideing rough. But it will shift. Do i need a
new cable?

Could be, just have to get in there and look. Cables do wear out, but you would want to make sure there is nothing wrong in the linkage, or the neutral safety switch. There are other thing to look at.
