What is the story on aluminum wheels. Any better than the steel rims? Lighter or is it just a cool ego thing?

Been around on new cars at least since 1955 in US (Kelsey-Hayes/Alcoa "Sabre Spoke") and as optional eq. since the 30's. They are generally lighter and once gave a cool expensive race look. Today they are cheaper to manufacture than steel, especially in low series. One could make a long list with pros and cons but in the long run: I'd say it started as a "cool ego thing" and still is. ;-)
