clock sprring and steering wheel cause smt to fail

Asked by Guru2QNR5 Aug 24, 2023 at 04:41 AM about the 2002 Toyota MR2 Spyder 2 Dr STD Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I recently replaced my steering wheel
with an aftermarket wheel. In doing so
I completely removed the clock spring
and wheel with shift buttons built in
and replaced with a pop off "racing
wheel" car seemed fine for a few hours
but then the smt failed.  Smt and
engine lights are on. Will only go into
1st and 3rd.   Could deleting the clock
spring and replacing the steering wheel
cause the transmission to fail?

When you removed components that the computers check they go into a default mode so you only get the bare minimum of computer control, that is called limp in mode, you have to put back the components removed the it it possible that you will need it go to the dealer and have the vehicle flashed to bring it back online. You cannot mess with vehicles that have OBD systems without causing problems.
