2003 V6 Highlander idling rough and engine light on

We own a 2003 V6 Highlander. This week the engine light came on and our
daughter (the primary driver) let us know. She filled it up with gas to see if
maybe the fuel gauge was not working and we opened and tightened back the
gas cap to see if it was that.  Neither worked.  When we turned the car on it
was idling very rough.  It's been at the shop for 4 days now.  They haven't
been able to find the exact reason/code for why the light came on and the
engine is running rough.  Has anyone had this happen?  Did you find a
solution?  I can only find things about where the light comes on but I don't
know if there were engine issues. Thanks!

Have them test the EVAP system. If system is plugged, it can cause the symptoms which you describe. Have them check the charcoal canister. Sometimes it can be filled with gasoline. That happens when you overfill your gas tank. Also a failed purge valve will within the EVAP system can cause problems.
