poor acceleration

Before making major engine adjustments or changes, consider a tune-up. I'd would look at replacing all filters (fuel & air). Clean the Carb or Mass Air Sensor (TCS on an Acura). If the check engine light is on, it could be an Oxygen Sensor. A diagonostic check with a computer can reveal any codes like this. If you have not done so, the recommended timing belt change is around 120K. A lot of the above can be done while in the shop for this, including replacing the spark plugs. At a minimum try running a couple tanks of Premium Fuel through the car and maybe a bottle of injector cleaner.

thank you. This is a car I am thinking of buying and the seller implied that it was not a big deal, just an old car thing. I know NOTHING about cars (this is going to be my first car) so I am grateful for your answer. Now I am going to take this car to have it checked. I just want a reliable car, it need not be powerful but common sence tells me slow to get on the freeway IS a big deal.

Glad to help. Consider having a mechanic do a routine inspection before the purchase. I doubt a CarFax would be there due to age. At a minimum do the test drive to get a prespective on what may be needed.
