2005 Solara Conv - broken timing belt

Asked by l1c4 May 08, 2014 at 12:14 PM about the 2005 Toyota Camry Solara SE Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I have a 2005 Solara convertible with ~110,000 miles.  The timing belt just broke on it.  In addition to replacing the belt and water pump (makes sense), the dealer is claiming that the pulleys also need to be replaced.  Does this make sense?  In addition, the dealer is claiming that the broken timing belt also damaged the power steering system, and is recommending replacing the pump, reservoir and fluid line.  I have not seen this complication in any of my research, and am a little dubious about this.

The above answer is not 100%correct. The timing belt is enclosed and can not damage your power steering pump. Also a complete kit for timing belt replacement includes the idler pulleys- specially on a Toyota. Maybe you should find a better mechanic.
