Noise coming from engine

Asked by Rick Feb 10, 2016 at 09:06 PM about the 2001 Toyota Camry LE

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Had Trans flushed and engine oil
changed aproximately 2500 miles ago.
Both were at drive temp from runing
around town prior to draining. Oil tech
was honest and mentioned he had me
run the engine with no oil while flushing
the transmission (auto) and had me
cycle down through the gears and back
to park, two times, before he realized
there was no oil in the engine. Engine
appears to be making quite a bit of
noise now. Oil changed regularly since
car was brand new at this place. What
damage do you think may have been
caused? I did have tech write on receipt
what happened and date an sign.

I was told by another shop because I thought it was coming from alternator or air compressor after they checked the alternator that the noise wasn't coming from the alternator or air compressor. It sounded to them like possibly bottom end.

Time for a new engine at the mechanics expense. I am glad he was honest but even a minute with no oil is too much. The first thing to go would be bearings but the cylinders are probably scored and the top end would also be damaged. In other words - EVERYTHING!

If it were my car I would have another mechanic drop the pan and check a rod bearing for scoring. Your oil change guy should not have any argument at all as he knows darn well what damage he did.

FIRST...I would obtain an estimate for a replacement engine from a Toyota Dealer. Since this vehicle is some 15 years old...I would negotiate a CASH value with the "Oil Change Expert". I would then decide if I want to repair the engine OR sell it as is...and buy another vehicle.
