Why does A/C only work on defrost? Relays and mode door actuator are good

When you hit defrost, the AC comes on by default. It bypasses controls and the AC just runs. In your case, you have a fault in the normal operation of he AC. Could be any of several devices not working properly. Might be the engine coolant temperature sensor, temperature switch, cycling switch, or something else. Have an Ac shop diagnose. It's probably nothing serious. And remember, the AC is fourteen years old.
