Engine get hot when shut off.

I'm not sure how long the van has
been doing this only recently noticed
it. But while driving the van around it
maintains the proper engine temp.
I've never had it over heat on me.
But if I turn the van off come back
and start it a few minutes later they
temp gage will be almost 3/4 the way
up somtimes almost to red.  It will
hold there for a minute or so as I idle
and it will drop back down to proper
temp. Is this normal? Seems like the
van shouldn't get hotter while it's
turned off

2006 Chevrolet express
360,000 kms
New rad, water pump, thermostat.

Have you checked the anti freeze level to make sure there is enough in the cooling system. Maybe low.

Sounds like you just have a bad temperature gauge or the sensor going to the engine block for the temperature gauge. Does not sound like it is over heating.
