2006 Chev Cobalt steering

Hey! So, for the past few months my steering
wheel would lock up randomly, usually just when I
was turning to pull out of my driveway. The past
few weeks though, it is locking up everytime I  turn
my wheel enough to go around cornerss, make a
turn or pull into a driveway. It has locked up for
seconds at a time and i have to yank it to make it
move... Please let me know if you know! Also, I
was told that there MIGHT be a recall on my car
because of the electric power steering, so it could
be that. My car is the affected year and model, but
when I checked the VIN it said there was no
recalls. This could have been wrong though.

If you checked with a GM dealer about a recall for your car and were told there is no recall, then there is no recall. It's that simple. It's all tracked by your car's VIN. It may well have been recalled years ago and fixed. If the top bearing in your front struts is worn out it may be preventing the steering from functioning properly. Have that checked. There is also a u joint (can't remember its proper name) in the steering shaft that runs from the steering column to the steering rack. When they wear out they usually get loose and rattle, but it may be seizing up and causing a problem. Also scan for trouble codes in case there is an electronic component that has failed. Your power steering is all electric so there are some sensors etc. involved. Good luck.
