96 Subaru Outback Dies then runs help??

Asked by lorettamarie Jun 18, 2013 at 11:45 PM about the 1996 Subaru Legacy Outback Wagon AWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 96 Subaru outback legacy, automatic, 2.8 engine. My car has been driving fine, until recently it will drive for a while then start to die high speeds but mainly lower speeds. thought it was the fuel pump. Replaced that with a filter, cleaned carburetor, EGR valve, new spark, clean battery terminals, new throttle position sensor, and new catalytic converters. ( most things done here where shown on a check engine light)  there is no check engine light anymore, but my car will run fine for a couple days then starts to do this. I only put in premium gas and quality oil.   any suggestions? I also have had the rear tranny work and a new tranny gasket put on it December from a Subaru mechanic. any suggestions??

actually its a 2.5L. don't know what I was thinking. I have taken it to two mechanics no one can figure it out. was told I needed a new alternator. put a new one on, still does it. tired of buying new parts and putting them on and still not working right. exhausting and expensive!! I hate Subarus...

I doubt the alternator has anything to do with your problem unless the battery and alternator are stone cold dead. Randomly replacing parts is expensive and usually does not solve anything. Intermittent problems are a b*tch to find and repair. I would check out the coil and the electrical connections to it. Try and narrow it down to an ignition thing or a fuel delivery problem.
