Just had my clutch replaced by a trusted, years long mechanic.  Feels like a new car..except...when I reverse. When I place the clutch in neutral, there's a swish of bearings type of noise.  Purchased gear oil, throwback bearing was replaced along with everything else.  Could it be that I damaged the transmission driving with a bad clutch?  If so, any suggestions on where to find a reasonably priced one apart from a salvage yard?  As an aside, I brought my baby into a Subaru dealership for the free Spring inspection & was informed of several other needed repairs, i.e., tie rod, timing belt, etc. which, amazingly weren't needed after a careful inspection by my mechanic!  Please don't suggest buying a new car....it's simply impossible right now. Finally, does anyone know of a Subaru repair class?  I don't mind getting my hands dirty :).

As for a repair class, close as you're going to get is: The Ultimate Subaru Message Board If you don't have bearing noise in forward gears, and it shifts fine, don't worry about it. When shifting into reverse try putting it in another gear first (with the clutch in), does it still complain? If your Subi is still going strong at that mileage, you will probably get a lot more out of her...'03 was a good year.
