1998 Subaru manual....all wheel drive......clutch to ground...difficult to shift gears unless engine is off

I can't shift gears unless engine is off.....once I come too light and try to
engage clutch....car cuts off...I can put in neutral, but not in first unless engine
is off. Starts just fine

I would say that the clutch needs to be looked at, or the synchro's in the trany are gone. Chances are the clutch may just need adjusting.

FoR, don't think these had hydo clutches yet...which is good news for RaW: Find the cable adjuster and tighten it! If it IS hydraiulic check the slave first, as their rubber piston seals grind up in a dirty cylinder. If ok check master. I've seen both wear out. If everything's tight your pressure plate springs are too old to separate the disc much, so you may have to replace the assy. So look at the cheapest stuff first. Good luck.
