To know why it came on, have the vehicle scanned for trouble codes. An auto parts store can do this, write down any codes.

Has the light remained on? If so, whatever triggered it remains to be a problem and will show up with a scan. If it has gone out, it would still be good to have the car scanned as Rowfast suggested because the computer records things that may have happened that may no longer exist as a trouble (like a cylinder that is no longer faulting). In either case it is not likely related to the oil level and you probably don't need to change the oil (unless its been 5000 miles since it was last changed).
