Clanking noise when turning left

Asked by Sera May 27, 2016 at 09:56 PM about the 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GT Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My 1999 Pontiac Grand Prix started making a
clanking noise only when I turn right, I was told it
was my right tie rod end so I took it in to a local
mechanic to get that fixed. He said my tie rod was
fine but my axle needed to be replaced, I gave him
the go ahead to fix it but when I got the car back it
was still making the noise. He said he couldn't
figure it out...  Also I recently got all 4 tires replaced.
Anyone have an clue as to what it could be? I would
really appreciate the input. Thanks for your time. :)

It'd be really difficult to figure out what the noise was without seeing the car. If it happens while you are going around a left turn and it's repetitive like clank-clank-clank, it's possible it could be the axle, though people usually describe that as a click or pop. If it only happens on bumps or cracked pavement, it could be a sway bar link or control arm. I know this probably isn't very helpful, it may be best for you to get a second opinion from another reputable shop in your area.

I agree. You need a diagnosis from someone who can actually see and drive the car. It's possible the wrong axle got replaced. It's sometimes tough to tell which side the noise is coming from, but you want to be sure before you spend more money on random repairs hoping you might get lucky and fix the problem.
