My Grand prix starts every time but will only idle for 3 or 4 seconds

Asked by tonydd Mar 06, 2013 at 04:23 PM about the 1998 Pontiac Grand Prix 2 Dr GTP Supercharged Coupe

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I was driving at 60 miles and hour and pressed the gas to get in front of someone and the car cut off. It will start every time but will not idle more than 3 to 4 seconds. There are no warning lights on.

Sounds like the fuel pump. I had a Ford Taurus and the fuel pump went out just like that. Died going down the interstate. I was able to restart on the side of the road and it idled, but would die when I touched the gas. I am assuming the car is running smooth for the 3-4 seconds? If it is running rough and then dying, you may have another issue.

Its the high speed resistor for the fuel pump.. You'll find it under the passenger fender behind the wheel and plastic. Its a pain in the ass to get to so when you take it off relocate it to right under the hood on the firewall. DO NOT BUY A FUEL PUMP!! This part was only like 40 bucks or something when I had to change mine years ago.

Just for reference, its a little white funny looking thing about 6 inches long. kinda "U"shaped at the bottom. http://www.pfyc.com/WB3006.html A little more expensive than I remember.
