2001 Eclipse 4 cyl manual transmission goes into gear but clutch slips in all gears.

Asked by Shankyshank May 16, 2015 at 08:59 PM about the 2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder GS Spyder

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The clutch requires high rpms to
catch and once engaged/in 1st gear
it feels like it is slipping b/c the
engine will pull some but it will also
begin to rev and have less and less
pulling power ... especially when
going up hills.  Also, the clutch pedal
has to go pretty much all the way to
the floor and it catches very close to
the floor too. Is this a straight clutch
replacement or is it possible that the
clutch master or slave cylinder or
something else is the issue?

Sounds like it might be time to replace your clutch, pressure plate and throw out bearing. How many miles on it? Has it been drove rough (racing)? But first I would visually inspect the slave cylinder operation. Is piston fully extending and retracting? If it's not fully retracting when pedal is released this could be your issue. If that's the case I would first check the pedal adjustment. If out of adjustment it will not allow the slave to fully retract.

Pulled the trans. Clutch disc on pressure plate side is gone ... disintegrated. Parts are ordered. Will check the slave we its back together. Thanks for the pointer. Are you familiar with adjusting the clutch pedal?

Yes but yours should be ok after you replace the clutch. Normally you only have to adjust the pedal if you want to raise or lower the pedal height when clutch engages. Mainly guys do this if they race their vehicles.
