99 Mitsubishi eclipse

Asked by Melanie Mar 03, 2017 at 05:20 AM about the 1999 Mitsubishi Eclipse Spyder 2 Dr GS Convertible

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

99 Mitsubishi eclipse spyder won't start. Does this
car have a oil cut off switch or sensor that could
shut down everything? If so how does that work.
Okay here's the long story. ..about a month before
the "incident" my car died due to a bad (not dead)
battery had it checked and charged overnight.  I go
to junk yard to get another,& they said battery is
fine, so I drive it about a month. I noticed the low
oil light was on when I turned corners I put some
oil in and the next day car dies just as it did in the
bad battery way. However,  I had been
continuously driving over a large amount of pot
holes and when someone can't to jump start my
car they had seen the oil filter was loose and that
all oil I put in was gone. .. they immediately
stopped charging the bad battery and said I siezed
my moter. Im hoping it's just the bad battery and
an alternator. maybe a switch Or something that
doesn't mean the car is dead.  Your help is much
appreciated.

Also its a manual transmission. And a few months before the above the thermostat went bad I replaced it. And both times when it died there was no noises or anything odd. Felt like battery died both times. And no engine lights just the oil light when turning due to no oil.

Is your car home or at the garage? You said they stopped charging the battery, why? First charge the battery. Disconnect (if there is one) the coil wire so the spark plugs don't fire up. Some cars don't have a distributor coil but figure out how to spin engine over without starting. If you ran out of oil which apparently did, check the dipstick to determine if it did loose oil. You said oil lite goes on when you corner, so there is very little oil at the puckup in the pan. If nothing shows, then add appropriate amour to show in the dipstick. Spin motor after adding for a minute or so. ? This will circulate oil to the bearings, can and lifters. Plug the electrics in and start. It may sputter etc You see, if the engine was hot, the bearings MAY have locked and when it cooled down metal contracts and clearances open up. Hopefully you didn't 'spin the bearings!

Sorry it took so long to get back Okay, update... Got it started forest couple times no knock. I haven't drove it. Put oil in it. Drove to gas station across the street because almost outta gas. Then a guy looked at it started it and it knocks and won't stay running without giving a little gas constantly. Is it fixable? how? and can i do it myself?
