Asked by William Nov 08, 2022 at 02:10 AM about the 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis LS

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I bought a 2001 Mercury Grand Marquis and it had
no key a changed out the ignition and I need to
know if the key needs to be programmed to the
car. If so can I do it or do I need to take it to a
dealer.

If you changed out the key and tumbler assembly then the security system needs reprogrammed to recognize the new components, so either the dealership or a locksmith with the right tools. Locksmith will be cheaper then the dealer.

This vehicle requires two working keys for you to be able to program additional keys yourself to the vehicle. So either way you have to go to the Dealer or a locksmith, as stated above. Hope that helps! Jim

My scanner has that button also but it doesn’t work on resetting the security system when parts have been replaced.
