Battery or Alternator?

Asked by Noradio Nov 08, 2020 at 12:30 AM about the 1998 Mercury Grand Marquis 4 Dr GS Sedan

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

Was driving when my battery light came on. All the sudden radio starts cutting
out than dies completely. Than my headlights go out and dash light. Pulled into
my place and engine is running. Shut the engine down, tried to start again and
just clicks. Does this sound like a toast battery or alternator.

Sounds like alternator wasn't producing enough voltage to charge the battery. But I would have both tested to make certain....

Alternator or its wiring. Bad battery will not do that.

Sounds like the alternator. When the alternator stops working the engine and everything else will continue to run off the battery until the battery is dead. Hope that helps! Jim
