Those Jeeps had three different 4x4 systems. Your Laredo model probably has the Select-Trac II system. For normal driving put the lever into "2 Hi". For snow or difficult terrain, put it into "4 Hi Full Time". You can shift that gently while moving slowly and gentle on the gas, or coasting. Do Not Shift while spinning....things will break. The Limited models had Quadra Trac II or Quadra Drive II. That's another story.
