My 2001 grand cherokee is the 4.7 V8 & 4x4 but
doesn't have an obvious 2wd setting. Only 4all
time, neutral, and 4low. Will neutral work the same
as 2wd without tearing up the transmission or
transfer case or etc?

If you have buttons that say 4wdhi 4wdlo 2wd and so on then yes it can be turned on 2wd if you do not have the buttons in your jeep then it is strictly 4wd. Neutral is no drive at all
