Check engine light on have to put in neutral to keeping running

What would cause the check engine light to come on and why I'm I having to
put it in netrual to stay running

Best bet would to connect it to a hand held analyzer and check for error codes. Parts stores like Auto Zone and Advanced Auto will usually check the codes in your computer for free.
