97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Died And Won't Start Back

Asked by GracieBracie Jun 06, 2021 at 04:07 AM about the 1997 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I just bought a 97 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo
4wd, 4.0 straight six. On the way home the check
engine light came on and I started to notice it didn't
have the power I thought it should. It was
intermittent, and definitely seemed worse when
going uphill even slightly. The code was voltage
bank one sensor two. I tightened the battery cables
and it went off, not to come back on again until I
took it on a trail. Nothing serious just a few humps
and ruts and one steep climb. Never even had to
put it in 4wd. I made it home fine, but about ten
miles down the road the next morning, I turned to
go up a hill and it died. I discovered a hole in my
fuel line and when I tried to crank it after it died my
fuel light comes on, even though my gauge read
about three quarters of a tank when it died, so I
called someone to bring me some gas to try and
drive it home but it still wouldn't fire up. Had to
have it towed home where I replaced the fuel line,
got more gas put in it and it still wouldn't start. I've
now changed the coil, the crank sensor and the
distributor. I thought the distributor was the issue
since it was wet on the inside, but changing it
didn't fix the problem. The car just cranks and
cranks and cranks but it won't start, there's no
spark. The fuel pump is working, and it's got
enough gas in it to start it, but the gas light is going
on and off. It'll stay off for a few seconds, then it'll
come on, then it might go off again. And just keep
doing that as long as trying to start it. I've got
people saying timing, ignition switch, computer
issue, etc, but I don't want to blindly throw any
more money at parts.

Make sure battery has a full charge and connections all good. Put plenty of gas in the tank? If it cranks good but won't start, have a helper crank it while you visually check for spark at the plugs--use a gage check proper fuel pressure--check fuel injector pulse--check applicable trouble codes. Those are the basic checks, in my opinion. Let us know.

I have checked battery voltage and it's good, as well as all my grounds and connections. Found the throttle cable wasnt hooked up properly which may have been my "power" issue, I fixed that as well as a bad o2 sensor. I don't have a fuel gauge but my redneck fuel pressure test came back good, regardless I'm going to pick up a gauge anyway. I doubt it's a fuel problem though as there is no spark. I checked it before doing any work and have checked it with each part I've changed. It's always the same, cranks but no spark. I've also checked all fuses and relays, switched them out with spares even if they seemed fine but nothing has changed. My next thing to change will be the ignition switch, but I doubt that's the problem either. I want to try changing the pcm, but I'm not sure how to go about it since I'd be pulling it off a wrecked 98 grand Cherokee that I have. I'm not good with computer stuff, and I've heard different things from different people. Some say it would be a simple swap, some say I'll have to disconnect the battery to reset everything for the car to accept the new pcm, others say it won't work at all. I don't know what to do at this point. I've checked and changed everything I know to check or change and now I'm in over my head in computer issues that I don't know anything about.
