Does anyone know of a more reliable engine for my 04 Audi A4 1.8 turbo. I

Asked by Guru9SGXT Jun 30, 2017 at 11:21 PM about the 2004 Audi A4 1.8T Turbo Cabriolet FWD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

The repairs needed on the engine exceed the cost of buying a used engine with
a 24 month warranty. But what i'm finding is these engines are costly to keep
up.  Is there a more reliable engine that would fit/work. Maybe even a newer
more reliable VW engine

You are stuck with the stock engine. You can't put a Toyota engine in it - sorry.

I've had both engines. Both were very reliable and nice to drive with different characteritics. V6 is smooth with adequate power, 1.8t has similar power but more torque (turbo). MPG better on 1.8 as you would expect. Depends what you want it for but both good choices no lemons really. Tooling about town 1.8 , touring Europe /toy etc go V6.

The 1.8 20 valve turbo engine is very reliable if it is maintained properly. These engines are known for sludging up if the oil is not regularly changed. And quality oil used. But other than that they are fine engines.
