What's wrong with it?

No idle, doesn't start without giving it gas,
wants to die all the time, backfires

Two things come to mind. An EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation) valve that's not closing properly can cause these symptoms. Or a bad Diverter Valve for the A.I.R. (Air Injection Reaction) system that's not working properly. Is your check engine or Service Engine Soon light on? If so, what codes do you have? Some auto parts stores can scan your computer for trouble codes and most will do it for free. I'd check the EGR valve first, then the Diverter Valve second. Hope that helps! Jim

timing gear/belt is out of adjustment, would look to the tensioner bearing, for allowing too much play,,,that'd do it~

Also sounds like a bad IAC valve , your experience may differ
