my 2003 PT Crusier Dream series engine light stays on and the mechanic gets no codes anyone help?

he has to see a code, what kind of scanner does he have? almost all scanners even cheap $50 can see codes... have never seen this before but does not mean something isn't up somewhere. Most autoparts stores do it for free try em out.
