I own a 2006 Ford Explorer with 253000 miles on it. Experiencing problems with shifting while accleration.

Asked by nicki52731 Feb 13, 2014 at 07:36 PM about the 2006 Ford Explorer XLT V6

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

I purchased four new tires, same size but different brand, and after leaving I noticed my vehicle was not shifting into gear on acceleration and was making a very loud winding noise.  Is it a coincidence or would putting on new tires cause a problem with the transmission shifting.  I know a transmission can go at any time especially with as many miles as I have, but I had no warning at all prior to this.

On these the transfer case is very sensitive. The tires have to be the same size same tread same amount of tread. Even though a tire is the same size different brands can be 1/2" taller or smaller. This causes the transfer case to bind up. Put 4 new tires on the same kind exactly and it will fix your problem.

How lucky you are to own an Explorer that didn't need transmission work at 90,000 miles!

I think I have the same issue with my 2006 Explorer but I didn't just put new tires on my explorer. If the truck idles for a little while when I press on the gas pedal the truck winds and after a minute or so it kicks in to normal and runs normal. It doesn't happen all of the time and no lights are on - not sure what is causing it. not consistent but I believe it happens consistently if I let the truck idle for a while before driving it - anyone know what would cause this?
