is it risky to service trans on a 99 ford explorer with 188k in the blind not sure last time it was done i only had it for 1k miles ago i just dont want to screw with it if its risky like the 02-05 explorers

i have a 99 and 03 ..i screwed my 03 up by doing a whole trans fluid change and now it
wont shift ...the 03 started off with o/d light flashing ..now my 99 is doing the same thing

What does the fluid look like in the 99 via a dip stick check? Is it red or reddish brown? If really dark colored you're probably on borrowed time. If more toward the red color it's probably safe to change it. Your 03 should be change by a professional as there is a procedure to follow in replacing the fluid.
