Check Gage light comes on even with a full tank.

Asked by Missym1 Jun 23, 2015 at 03:11 PM about the 2002 Ford Explorer XLT 4WD

Question type: Maintenance & Repair

My fuel light will come on even when I have a full tank of gas.  When the light comes on
my AC stops blowing cold air until the light goes back off.  What is wrong with it?

On your Ford, the check Gage light is not necessarily related to low fuel. It can also be triggered by a low oil pressure warning or by high temperature warning. If any of the gauges are outside the normal range it triggers the ECM to put the engine in limp mode. In limp mode, the AC compressor is turned off to avoid extra strain on the engine. It could be something as simple as a sensor, (oil pressure), or (temperature) that needs replaced. These vehicles also have had problems with the instrument cluster itself going bad. Next time this happens, check to see if the other gauges are in the normal range. Hope this helps, Gordy
