What engine will interchange with a 2002 ford explorer

4.0 v-6 (if that is what is in there now). If you have a V-6 it is a SHOC engine. Another one of the same type will work as long as it is not the 4.0 V-6 OHV engine which they stopped using in 1999. I believe vin code "X" designates the OHV - pushrod type engine.
