I just bought a 2006 Ford escape xlt with 97,000 miles on it, a day ago, and it looks like oil is on top of engine around plugs, any ideas what is the problem?

Service engine light just came on, and oil is sitting on top of valve cover aounnd
the spark plugs, what could this be?

The light could be telling you that it is due for an oil change, the oil around valve cover is probably the valve cover gasket that would need to be replaced. Also check the PCV valve & hose.
