Upgrade to what a stock option that could have came with it new? Otherwise go to a stereo/speaker custom shop, buy the stereo you like and have it installed. If speakers are junk replace with quality units and add a amp if needed, again have it installed there I advise.

Stereo's have came a long way since 2001. A new unit will be worth it, may have back up camera, blue tooth to sinc your phone to or other devices, usb ports, some for memory sticks to play music from, touch screen ect.

Your year CV has a single DIN (and no brackets for holding most aftermarket brands), if you want to upgrade you'll want to put in a double DIN or head unit. Check out crownvic.net, the topic has multiple how-to's over there.
