How to squeeze the most HP out of stock engine.

Question type: Car Customization

Hey I'm new to "performance" moding on cars. I'm
doing all the work myself aside from the tuning.
So far I have a 75mm throttle body from an
expodition, a forced air intake with high flow filters.
I've left the cats that came with it on it but removed
everything from the cats back and just ran straight
pipes with no mufflers. Thicker sway bars and
limited slip differential put into it so far.

I dont want to really go for a supercharger or turbo
until I get it completely finished, the car has 130k
miles on it and I've pulled the block appart and
cleaned and serviced it. What else can I or should I
do.  I'm trying to get as much power out of the 4 6l
sohc engine as I possibly can without it exploding.

There is very little you can do to increase the HP on a Ford 4.6 engine easily or economically. Long tube headers may gain 10 or 15 HP, but at a very high cost per HP. Cold air intake, larger throttle body and cams will also raise the HP some, but all of these modifications will require a tuner device and some sort of custom tune or expensive dyno time. Custom cylinder heads are available, but they alone may exceed the value of the car.

Thanks guys I was kinda thinking I was at the end of my rope, it's got the large headers coming out to high flow cats and i said 86 the mufflers. The only thing left to so I suppose is the dyno tune. Eventually I may spend the money for cams and heads but more and more I think about it I'll probably just blow this engine up eventually and pay the money for a big block and an adequate tranny.

Your power gains with exhaust and intake upgrades will be limited. The only real path to power is head work and cams OR forced induction which is the easiest route to take. If you blow it up you can bolt the supercharger onto the next engine.

I have the 02 town car Cartier it came with an all aluminum engine, all 02 town cars are. Sorry forgot plastic manifold. When its time for it's replacement it needs the Mustang Cobra intake. Larger injectors and more fuel pressure along with a set of the DOHC heads that you can get at pick-n- pull for around $150 a pair or the entire engine for $275 depending on your closest pnp some are less. Lower the gears and if you really want more blast a NOS kit should put you where you would easily take most by surprise. This engine is the same as the mustang cobra it just lacks a few mods. You can expect to see the great fuel economy and some of the dependability fly out the window. If you don't like the DOHC the 3 valve per cylinder heads are just as cheap as the dohc and many of the engines at pnp that are listed as 16 valve engines are actually 24 valve 3 valve per cylinder in stock form these are around 265 . F150's, Expeditions, and Lightnings any Ford with the 4.6 until 2010 or the 5.3 thru 2010 and later where the eighth digit in the VIN is a W will have the SOHC 24v heads that are plug n play and with the other upgrades you can easily expect to see 325+ without NOS and should get anywhere from 375 to 475 with NOS depending on the NOS kit . Done correctly this engine is still very dependable. The picture is of an earlier 2000 model I am not quite finished with the 02 I am fitting 305/40/zr22's on 22x12's and lowering with stiffer suspension and larger sway bars. It will have a can am look with other custom one offs with wider quarter panels and front end to allow for the monster tires and wheels. The 2000 has 245/35/zr20's and will hold the road with stock suspension. It just leans too much but it will out corner a stock Miata!
