Between the high and low marks on the dipstick is about one quart. I don't think the dipstick is long enough to show three quarts low. Your engine probably needs six quarts total, so add one more quart and see where it's at. Try not to overfill, and allow five minutes for oil to return to the pan before taking a reading on the stick. Tell us what you find.

Well... There is either a leak somewhere, or your truck has the wrong dipstick, or you are reading it incorrectly.. Did you just buy this truck? Oil capacity is just over 6qts with a filter change. The cross hatched area on the stick is approx 1 qt of capacity, meaning if the the oil is on the lower cross hatch marks (at the bottom almost off the scale) one quart of oil will take it to the top of the hatch marks. Whatever you do, don't overfill it.
